some people need to work on their priorities. We had only 1 less sack than the NFC sack leading teams. We were last or close enough to it in stopping the run. Let’s fix the problem areas before we start looking to upgrade a position that is holding its own.
Was the pass rush consistently good, or did we just rack up an ungodly amount of sacks in one game against a team that had an OL on an historically terrible pace held together by duct tape at the time?

The pass rush was consistently way better than the run protection. And I mean WAY better

This and the fact the defense had a ton of opportunities due to being on the field most of the game.

This is funny and reminds me of the endless, year after year conversations of "When are we going to have a true #1 receiver"

It's not quite as easy is it sounds to get one of the top guys.

Agreed @SoulfishHawk ..

You have to try though, which the Seahawks don't really do.

Carroll DE picks:

Bruce Irvin 1st (nice pick, but was picked too early and was never dominant)
Ty Powell - 7th rounder
Cassius Marsh- 4th
Frank Clark- 2nd (nice pick but I honestly feel the only reason we picked him is because he fell due to personal issues, we wouldn't have spent first round capital on him)
LJ Collier- 1st (picked waaayyyyyyyy too early)
Darrell Taylor- 2nd
Alton Robinson- 5th
Boye Mafe- 2nd (very promising)
Tyreke Smith- 5th
Derick Hall- 2nd (too early IMO)
Mike Morris- 5th

In summary, Pete has selected two DE's in the 1st in his 14 years as HC and neither of them had undisputed first round grades. Even Hall had some (not all in fairness) "experts" projecting him in the 3rd.

Just something to ponder...

Mafe has regressed in his run defense. He would be suboptimal as the starter across from Nwosu. He should be the #1 rotation Edge until his run defense improves.

IMO, the Seahawks #1 roster need is a blue-chip Edge player. There are quite a few FAs available in 2024 including Josh Allen, Leonard Floyd, Danielle Hunter, Za'Darius Smith, Brian Burns and a bunch more who are good run stoppers with mid to high pressure/sack ratings.

The Seahawks MUST FIX THEIR RUN DEFENSE. Edge play against the run in 2023 was atrocious once Nwosu left.

Getting a top-tier Edge is the single most important task needed to improve the defense.

This team hasn't had a legit top end pass rusher since prime Bennett. It's not like they haven't tried to invest in that position, it just hadn't worked out yet.

And I completely agree. You need a dominant pass rusher in today's NFL. Hopefully they can figure it out.
Bennett averaged 0.52 sacks per game at Seattle.

Nwosu has averaged 0.5 sacks per game at Seattle.

Boye has averaged 0.3626 so far in his career.

This is a good year for pass rushing defensive ends. Hopefully John will sign one of them. My preference is Huff, I think he would be double digit sack guy on our team.

Because they've blown too much capital away from the trenches while missing on too many draft picks.
What would a team that has a history of having great WR's after personnel turnover do. Like Green Bay or Dallas? They take the top dog, or the perceived Top Dog, and trade him. Replace him and build another. DK is worth more to Seattle, on another team. We need cap room, and young blood. The goal is not to win 10 games next year, but to win 13 games in years 2 and 3. We need a QB, flashy TE, WR's that a young, fast and can bend down and catch the ball, as well as reach out. An Edge rusher, Offensive Linemen that aren't on SS and Linebackers who can play DE or cover.

And Michael Bennett was not a good run defender early in his career. It takes time for natural edge rushers to learn to set the edge. Of course there are some edge players like Taylor who are destined to be situational pass rushers which is fine. Having third down specialists is perfectly fine but Taylor had not business being a starter on first or second downs. He isn't no Freeney or Mathis that can win with speed to play run defense. Taylor doesn't know how to use his tools.

Maybe with Pete gone some of those difficult decisions will be made

Dunlap and Clowney were pretty good FA pickups during their time here so there is that I guess.

Modern NFL defenses use rotations and schemes to bring pressure. That is kind of the whole point of the 3-4 defense.

Problem with a star at any position other than QB, is if they get hurt, you fall off a cliff.

You really want stars at DL, OT, QB and to a lesser degree EDGE and CB. That's generally where smart teams invest their money. My dream DL would be a monster NT (Vita Vea type) paired with a game wrecker (Aaron Donald type) beside him. You could then have a rotation of speed EDGE's that could get one on one's. That's why Mebane, Bennet and Avril worked so well for us.

Bennett was a DE/edge. He kicked inside to DT on obvious passing situations. We never had a star at DT during Pete time with the Seahawks.
