I'll echo those that said the WIND was a huge factor today as far as accuracy with the passing game--on both sides. Wentz looked worse than Russell with having multiple balls sail over receivers. I think the bunny throw was especially affected because he tried to lob it and it sailed due to the wind. That TD drop by Metcalf also seemed to move to the left right before it got to him due to the wind. It was like trying to hit a knuckle ball or catching a butterfly in the wind.
The absolute worst part of this game was the penalties. Getting into 1st and 25 situations is brutal. All the turnovers and pressure that our defense produced in this game and we gave up a blowout because our O-line couldn't get out of their own way. We really hurt Russell's MVP chances because asking him to throw on 3rd and long every time because of penalties is a tough task, especially in this weather.
Yessir. I agree with this post. There is nothing at all wrong with DK. A close look at the 3 "just missed" tagets he dropped against the Eagles shows each of them were just off his fingertips. Russ was throwing the ball with a little extra oomph into the wind avoid the int. One inch less on those and DK hauls them in.
As for our defensive effort, I was a tad less enthusiastic than Coach Carroll. During the game I felt like we backslid to pre-niner game performance level. Even though we didn't give up much in the way of points, thanks mostly to producing an incredible turnover rate, we were giving up too many yards against a seriously shorthanded offensive squad.
The game ended up being close on the scoreboard due, in no small part, to our propensity for committing drive killing penalties. With the turnover difference in our favor we should have won that one by at least 3 TDs.
If we're going to lose another game in the regular season the Niners are going to have to lose at least 2, one of which is their last meeting against us. We really, really, really, need to win the division.
