The next clue will be what they do with Drew Lock. If they let him walk then I'm thinking QB at 5. If they resign him then probably not drafting a QB, at least not at 5.

if lock is a competitor he will want a shot to start. i don't think he has that shot now on this team. he's probably going to look elsewhere for a shot. let's hope it's not the 49ers

Why would you pay $100M for a QB just to immediately waste a top 5 draft pick on another QB? They are going to build for Geno. QBs are drafted to start nowadays, not sit on the bench hoping they're Aaron Rodgers.

I wouldn't put it past them. John might very well snipe his dude and have him sit behind Geno for a couple of years. Makes sense to front load the deal so heavily if that's the plan.

I think I’m half with you… I think Geno is serviceable and can lead us but not sure he can lead us to a title. I’m hoping. But maybe this paves the way for a QB draftee. We need defensive rush, etc and having Geno calms me a little but I’d like a youngin too. Curious to see draft path now… still processing.

$52 million in the first year is not going to be a $52 million cap hit. It's going to be under $20 million. Couple that with the cuts we were likely to make anyway, and the fact that other free agent contracts can be written to have smaller 1st year caps and we still have the ability to sign several free agents.

There is gonna be an out, and the contract is front loaded because they see Geno as the bridge over troubled waters here.

If they see the guy this year, they're gonna take him this year. If it's Richardson or any other top-4 quarterback, they'll take him at 5 - and they'll STILL have 20, 2 seconds, and the rest of the draft to build the roster.

Unless it's not front loaded. Even still, this is the likely plan.

i wonder if PC/JS feared other teams paying as much if not more for geno on the open market. they had to have some intel to not only make this deal now, but also settle on this contract amount/structure. ofc saints just signed derek carr, so that's a bit of info right there. i guess we'll never know what geno would have gotten on the open market.

I'm guessing the seahawks see this as an Alex Smith situation. Decent enough bridge QB who will be a good mentor for whatever rookie comes in and keep you relatively competitive (hopefully as good as Mahomes )

He doesn't have a shot for next season, but I'm guessing this is actually a two year deal, which means the Hawks are looking to groom Geno's replacement. So the question is do they think that replacement is Drew Lock? If so, I can see Lock staying as a backup for now with the idea he becomes the man in two years. Frankly I think this would be his best option. Stay with an organization that believes in him and a system he's very familiar with or sign a cheap "prove it" contract with a new team and a new coaching staff where he has to learn a new system.
