Going to bet Pete is going to do what he does, make sure Bush is physically right, get him back to his game speed, we know he is a master motivator, he see's what he can do but needs to be sound to do it. Look at Adams, Penny, and Taylor to see where this may go as far as making sure he is recovered.

He was definitely worse than Barton last year. Bush didn't have really any redeeming qualities, and is also hated by Steelers fans like Barton was hated here.

Barton gets the whipping boy treatment, but he actually was a decent player in coverage. Barton's issues were with disengaging from blocks, which he is genuinely bad at, but he also didn't have a lot of assistance as he always had guys getting to him at the second level immediately due to bad run fitting.

Brooks was also suddenly awful last year. It was almost certainly a systemic failure more than a bunch of individual failures.

I've made this point before, but I think it speaks volumes that one of the better defensive coaches in the league who made his name as a linebacker specialist snapped Cody up immediately in the first wave of free agency. There's more redeeming there than people give credit for. He's unspectacular and preferably not a starter, but he's not the worst linebacker around.

Barton is probably going to look league average, maybe even slightly above average, if the line in Washington does a better job at keeping him clean.

Bush is physically gifted but has been absolutely dreadful since his rookie season. He can provide depth at the spot and is a legitimate reclamation project. I like the signing. I won't be surprised if he improves markedly, and I also won't be surprised if he doesn't even make the roster.

TL;DR: Cody Barton wasn't a spectacular failure, and Bush is just as bad (probably worse) but is a great candidate to improve.

Bush probably fits in better with the Hawks than what the Steelers wanted him to be when he was drafted. The Steelers wanted Bush to be a three down LB but he never showed that potential.

Barton is strictly a nickel/dime LB which has value but you don't expect him to crash down and fill a gap or stack and shed on a consistent basis.

A decent signings to take a flyer on a very talented LB.

Consistently. He allowed the 4th lowest passer rating in the league among linebackers when targeted at 68.6. Had two picks, but one was a gimme. Obviously has good range and speed if watching his tape. Also a decent tackler if he doesn't get swallowed up by blockers he engages with, which happened too often.

I wouldn't be surprised if Pete reached out to former Seattle Seahawks LB Keith Butler to inquire about Bush before signing him.

Butler was the longtime LB coach in PIT and was the DC for them in 2021. He has since retired.

Least favorite signing.

Why the hell did we pay a player Steelers fans hate more than we hate Barton who hasn’t been the same since his Acl when we coulda have kept the option open for Bobby? We do that, then we Would have a healthy all pro 2022 who can obviously call the defensive plays out of the helmet as opposed to bush league.

We need more than 1 LB, this doesn't close the door on anything.

Seems kind of high tbh

Agreed.

This was never going to be the highest impact signing, but I agree - this is more than I think we should have spent. $3M guaranteed for someone who is borderline starting LB with upside is probably above market value.

Jesus: Doesn’t work on Sundays. Only good for a couple games a year if you‘re lucky enough to get a MNF.

Hercules: You thought Vick got bad press? This guys known for killing lions, reptiles, and birds. Not to mention a long history of theft: horses, cattle, crops, jewelry, etc. Hell he even stole a dudes guard dog.
Availability and character issues, hard pass.

That write-up doesn't sound exactly awful (from last year). PFF grade was solid. In the vids he absolutely destroys a pulling guard, sheds, and makes a tackle, twice; I don't know if I ever saw Barton do that (but I don't really think we need to compare the two immediately).

He was not OK as a rookie; he was somewhat exceptional https://clutchpoints.com/grading-the-2019-nfl-season-for-steelers-rookie-lb-devin-bush

And he's still only 24.

It seems like things really soured for him in Pittsburgh, beyond the injury and performance. (???)

If he can regain more of his pre-acl form, this could be a great signing. Let's give the kid a chance, anyway.
