His stock was all over the place lately; it was hard to get a real handle on where he could go. If they really wanted him, they were right to not risk losing him on the trade down. I personally was getting the impression he was slipping, but other places were saying he could go as high as the fringes of the top 10. Who knows? Just takes one team.
That is an issue at the mid and bottom first round - the variance in draft grades. No complaints here and I rarely let a chance to bash JS go by. :)

I don’t hate it.. but I’m mixed on it. Maybe because I’m past yrs when I’ve heard about us having olinemen who moves around around to different positions.. they’re always subpar. So maybe what they explained about him just has me kinda meh

I am usually more complimentary of our picks than the average poster, but I dislike this one. Love going OL, but I see too much with Zabel that I just don't see translating immediately. Feels like a player who should've been taken 50 instead of 18 to me.

Again, love addressing the OL, but I don't like the player selected here compared to the value of the pick.

Geezee?
Does he have any nicknames? His name is unique enough to not need one, but also unique enough where people have probably made many for him. As a recovering alcoholic, it probably isn't good that "Grey Goose" immediately came to mind lol.

Being versatile is our new boy's strength.

He grew on me. Some of the Creed Humphreys comparisons started making sense.

I would have taken Donovan Jackson over Zabel. He's more ready, polished and proven. But I'll take it, at least it gives us hope they'll straighten out the IOL. And maybe Zabel ends up being the better player down the road. And like some others here, I think he'd make a great center.

Position of Need: A+
Quality of Player: A+
Value for Pick 18: B

No real complaints other than we might have been able to trade down a bit if that was our target.
Pre draft I was thinking 18 was high for Zabel but most draft boards has him and Booker is a similar place, with Booker going at 12 and the top tier OTs gone (I fancied us getting Banks at 18 with potential to play guard) if we traded down and Zabel went we would be struggling to give our O-line the improvement it needs

What would you have done? Tough to trade down when there isn't that blue chip guy who slid dangling there still on the board. Sounds like they tried.
I HATED this spot in the draft. Best players wouldbe gone and not much leverage.

I can see it with the athleticism, but I think a few things work against Zabel. The anchor is lacking, he got worked vs. Colorado, and he's been bad with penalties in the past.

The positional versatility is billed as a plus, but I can only see him succeeding at center - and if you're taking a center at 18, I'm looking for a bona fide dude there like Jackson Powers-Johnson, Ryan Kelly, Tyler Linderbaum, etc. who is entrenched and experienced as a center who held up against top flight college competition.

I dunno. If Benton wanted Zabel, I'm down. I just don't see an 18th overall dude.

Our pick is a FIVE position player, just how Schneider likes them! Anyways, today we celebrate, the cold hard reality can wait. Olu should start worring, so do Lucas, and Bradford.

This only fuels those complaining the OL has lowest cap hit in the League....5 years of a really good cheap versatile OL is obviously terrible.
