I was surprised how well they did without our top tier players in there. Mone had a good start getting in the back field, minus one or two plays the defense was attacking the run plays. It seemed like somebody would pop out behind the line of scrimmage to make a play.

Kodus Ken Norton jr.

They were blitzing DB’s and Denver didn’t have the answer. Gotta pressure the opposing QB at all times.
If the DL cant get there you need to do what they did last night. I really liked Norton’s game plan.
They stopped the run for the most part like you said.

My only concern with them using DB's to blitz, is leaving opposing receivers wide open.

The Hawks still play with 11 men on defense. Just because Clark and Reed aren't in that group doesn't mean complete disaster.

The Hawks will pressure the QB this year. Ansah should start week one.

What I want to see is a tougher run defense and I believe the Hawks can improve with what they have.

Drafting Collier IMO was actually a move to improve the run defense first and less about replacing "sacks".

Consistency at LB is going to make a huge difference this season.

They played without Poona. He's a decent anchor and gets some good penetration for a "run stopping" DT.

His leverage is top notch and he has good strength. Looking for good things from him this year.

BOT, yeah, the D-line wasn't bad most of the night. Most of the pressure involved blitzing, though. Workable, but you always want more pressure from the front 4.

Not intending to be a dick.
But what did he do on Thursday that showed improvement over what he did last year?
Did he improve his skillset or was he doin the same thing he did last year that we're (here at least) expecting and hoping he continues ?

If they blitz with DBs against a good QB and receivers they will pay the price.

Martin is the type of disruptor who's difficult to quantify in the regular season. His quickness is very unique and leads to pushing QBs off their spot alot, which isn't measurable. Dominating vs scrubs is nice but irrelevant.

I agree.

My concern with Martin is his lateral agility. He looks stiff compared to most of the dominant undersized pass rushers. He'd be a complimentary piece that can get you 4-8 sacks; the idea that he can be the #1 or #2 rusher on a great defense seems a little far fetched IMO.

I agree with no one as much as Knowone.

Agree. He can't bend either. Has the flexibility of a fundamentalist in Congress.

He's a PR specialist who can't be played on 1st or 2nd down but can get assisted sacks off of his line mates double teams. And that's just fine.

Did Al Woods or Poona go on field for the 1st half?

Neither Al Woods nor Poona Ford played in the 1st preseason game verses the Denver Broncos.

^FACT^, I (like yourself), believe that having Poona Ford in there, will change everything.
Offenses will have to rethink who to double team.

That might be the case, but not if the blitz gets home or forces an early throw.

If at the very least he is doing what he did last year,,,, than no drop off right? IMO I thought he played well. Guess we will see how the final outcome will be.

Really like Martin. A lot.

His timing on stunts is right on. His burst is top notch.

He does need to work on his body angle when turning the corner a bit. Needs to use leverage, or lean into the tackle, so he can get the proper 45 degree angle. That is a very teachable thing. A matter of getting the muscle memory down.

He is ideal for down and distance passing situations, but probably not big enough for an every down player, even as a dedicated LEO.

I think his potential is high as a package player. I think he gets a lot of play on important passing downs. Especially because I don't trust that the import from Detroit will hold up long.

I don't know about that regarding Collier. I think Pete wants him to develop into a power rusher off the edge, moving inside on passing downs. Pete seemed mainly enamored with his college pressure rate, but he is definitely a disciplined player and won't be a negative in the run game.
