Must admit the trade is looking better by the day.

Key to the trade is Ryan Bliss who is tearing it up in the minors in all facets offensively. Looks like trader Jerry might have fleeced the D-backs.
2023 Bliss stats:

15HR 63RBI 41SB .314 BA .902 OPS

Near future lead off guy with speed, power and gets on base.
He might be one of the couple bats they need.

Yeah we are looking like the big winner here. Candzone and Rojas have been terrific, but the other key to the trade is how well the others in the pen have stepped up. This trade wouldn't be possible if it weren't for guys like Speier, Topa, Brash and Munoz. Topa in particular has been absolutely great.

Reminds me of the trade last year. I hated it, like many, and it turned out great. It's hard to separate it at first, but so far it's looking pretty good.

I think the local and national media did a poor job of explaining the Sewald trade. The Seattle Times (Matt Calkins) reported it as a white flag. Ryan Divish seemed to be trying getting other Mariners players to express unhappiness with it. But nowhere was there an explanation of who the three players we were getting were.

Now that we know more, the trade makes good sense. We have an excess of pitching, and there are pitchers who can take Sewald's place. We know Sewald isn't a prototypical closer.

We needed help at second base. Wong had been given enough chances to show that he could be who he used to be, and Caballero was struggling and not ready to be the full-time secondbaseman. Rojas is a veteran, above-average player with a good walk/strikeout rates and plus speed. Even with his struggles at the plate this year, he's a good addition. He is also apparently a good locker room guy.

We also had just lost Kelenic for an extended period of time, and Dominic Canzone was meant to be a replacement for him. At the time of the trade, all anyone mentioned was his batting average (.237), although he had only been up in the majors for a couple of weeks. The media failed to mention that he batted .354 in AAA this year, with an OPS of 1.065 and 16 HRs and 71 RBIs. Plus we got Ryan Bliss, who is now playing shortstop in Tacoma, who is a decent prospect.

Venom Strikes, the Diamondback's Fansided site, conceded that as much as they loved getting a closer, that they might have given up too much for Sewald:

It remains to be seen how the trade pans out, but it makes sense, it's not a white flag and can help us win this year.

Thx for sharing that ^
Always cool to see. Having a blast watching this team. Also, when they are good, it helps that gap til the Hawks play.

Reminds me when the M's made that great(LOL) trade of Veritek and lowe to the Red sox for that lousy closer Heathcliff... damn did we get fleeced on that.

Lighten up man, you can't honestly be that sensitive. Then again, not surprised by your response. Thanks for the morning laugh.

Baseball (and life) is so unpredictable. Rangers, Astros and Angels all made big trades at the deadline to acquire some big names, and it hasn't worked out so far. Really didn't work out for the Angels who got two big bats and two starting pitchers and still went 5-15 after the trade deadline, completely falling out of contention. And now they've lost Ohtani.

And to think what they could have traded him for at the deadline. Shoot, it's very likely they lose him in the offseason. Oops.
A friend of mine is a big Angels fan, and even she was hoping they would trade him and build up their farm system again. Just pretty much assuming he's gone, they should have traded him. So glad they didn't.

Some trades are bad in hindsight. That one was objectively bad at the time, and merely looked worse when Lowe and Veritek became established. Even Bavasi and Zduriencik never did anything that stupid. I've also never forgiven Woodpecker for not re-signing Randy.
