I'm good with Geno under center for 2-3 yrs. Hopefully in the $20-25 mil range. Then spend the draft capital & FA to fix the Defense, and OL. Then take a hard look at the QB's next year. "Looks" to be a deep class.

You pay Geno if a near .500 record is important to you. Geno will keep you competitive, but he will also strip your roster because you won't be able to pay people you need.
So sign Geno if you feel you must but be aware that squeaking into the wildcard game (occasionally) and getting bounced regularly in that game will be your future.

You will rarely, if ever, win another playoff game until the impact of his contract sheds off - and by that time his impact will be less too because he will be older.

If Geno is smart, he takes a lesser contract like a mid-level starter or even less, and goes to a team like the Dolphins or even Baltimore (he would fail in Baltimore but the Fins could win with him if Tua does not return). Find a team that is solid but just needs a QB. That ain't us.

Then again, I imagine that Pete could do whatever he did with Geno with another QB. So yet another reason not to pay him big money.

NOTE:
But if we pay Geno, might as well bone up on how the Vikings are doing. It isn't a terrible fate. But the Vikings are an example of what happens to teams that pay market rate for middle of the road QBs. It strips their roster and they stay a solid regular season team that really has no future in the playoffs. We would basically be the Seattle Vikings. Again not a terrible fate. High floor but low ceiling. Fun to watch in the regular season, occasionally makes the playoffs. Not really any kind of contender, nor will they be.
I hear what you are saying, but it is kind of a catch-22 all around.

Option 1: We go with a cheap, inexperienced or "washed-up" QB and hope it is PC magic and he can repeat it.
Option 2: Draft a good QB and pay him rookie salary for a few years until he becomes good and have him break the bank like Wilson did.
Option 3: Pay Geno and hope he does not get too greedy and would rather see the team win a SB.

He moves and throws just fine on the run. Haters gonna hate...🙄
Debating isn’t hating. Some people love to have a good cry about it though.

You love pissing matches. I’ll give you back to the folks you normally get your showers from.

If I were you I would get this message to Jody right away, I bet she has no idea the outlook is so grim and only you with your vast knowledge can save the franchise..

If PC stays, the Defense will still suck and the ceiling will be a slight chance of winning a wild card game.

What's the point of spending big $ on a QB to get a few more wins in a rebuilding season?

Go with low dollar Lock and draft a QB to develop. Use 2023 to get your 8 rookies some experience and evaluate your needs for 2024 while rolling over big cap $ to 2024 for free agents to fill holes. The Seahawks may be able to compete in 2024 if they are smart with 2023 spending (including dumping overpriced, underproductive players and eating the dead money now).

Blame Pete comes right back. F sake. Well known had holes coming in. 3 starting rookie CB’s that played their ass off. This team can compete now and even more next year with the picks and cap space. Should have drafted Willis last year too right just to fill a position all while being the worst QB draft class in history at that position.

Meh he had so many turnover worthy throws the second half of the year. Someone tracks those and his were really high. And I still fall back on the bad cap numbers right now it’s at 46 million, you’re not fixing the defense in year one with one draft unless you hit a home run and their track record isn’t very good at building the defense.
They just landed 3 solid rookie CB’s in the draft.

Of course I "blame Pete". He's the one who has failed utterly in rebuilding this Defense.

"This team can compete now..."

They can compete to get a wild card spot, but do you really think they can compete in the playoffs?

I don't think so.

They nailed this last draft and my hope is they changed the process. The last few drafts have been fairly bad

Absolutely can. We all were well aware of the holes and youth we had out there. The fact we are talking about reaction from a playoff game when all the pundits had us somehow tanking and maybe winning 3 games this year all while many blaming Pete for everything completely adds to that Counter statement.

You're not even qualifying your statement with HOW MUCH Geno will come back to play for.
He's a Pro-bowl level Quarterback who's earned a decent effing payday, and YOU don't really even know what his demands will be.
One thing's for certain He is a KNOWN QUANTITY, and an UPGRADE to what we had with Russell Wilson.
Some of y'all are acting like he can be EASILY replaced with a ' Pig in a Poke' Draft pick, and that's the definition of DELUSIONAL.
I wouldn't give Geno a huge contract. His 10 Year History says otherwise. Maybe if he goes beyond what he did this year next year I'd be more on board.

Someone mentioned his last 6 games were trash. If you compare that to his History that's more in line..

Fair perspective.

Geno leads the league in interceptable passes; however, most came in games where we're playing from behind (PFF's data). So the question for Pete and John is whether Geno was at fault or whether he was trying to compensate for a fledgling defense. It seems how you answer that question determines where you fall on re-signing Geno or not.

I haven't looked at the salary cap situation in any depth yet. But we won 9 games with a bottom 25 defense, which included several rookies and inexperienced players. So while I agree that we probably can't fix the defense in one year, I do expect a dramatic improvement in one offseason. And if they don't improve, it's time to move on from Pete.

And likewise, I can be talked into it very easily and if you ask me tomorrow I might do a 180 lol.

Yes, give Geno a solid contract. Don't overpay, but I'd say that about any QB.

Since the salary cap was installed in 1994, the highest QB cap hit percentage for a Super Bowl winner was 13.1%. That was in the inaugural year, for Steve Young of the San Francisco 49ers. He was, of course, working on a contract that predated the cap. - https://bookies.com/nfl/picks/nfl-qb-contract-trends-what-is-the-optimal-cap-hit-to-win-a-super-bowl

The skill positions on offense are pretty well stocked - Lockett/DK/Goodwin as your main three receivers, our TEs are fantastic, and if I had my druthers we'd keep Penny to back up Walker.

The draft should be spent on a quality center and the defensive front 7. Maybe pick a QB to develop behind Geno, depending on how confident they are in Lock (I didn't see enough to have an opinion either way, and it'll only help him to be in the same system for a year).

Someone mentioned super bowl QBs are mostly in the first round. That's accurate - since 2000 there have been 46 QBs in the super bowl (counting each appearance as 1 QB), and 23 of those have been 1st rounders. So exactly half. But the NFL does a crap job of developing QBs - all the teams want an instant savior in the first round and they no longer develop. Of the non first rounders, you've got Brady (drafted to sit behind Bledsoe), Hasslebeck (drafted to sit behind Favre), Warner (sat behind Trent Green and developed in NFL Europe), Garrapolo (drafted to sit behind Brady), Gannon (sat behind Wade Wilson), Brees (backed up Flutie), Kaep (backed up Alex Smith), Jake Delhomme (developed in NFL Europe). And of course Russ, who was drafted to sit behind Matt Flynn but his crazy coach started him as a rookie.

Basically, you either draft a QB in the first and throw him to the wolves, or you draft one and SIT him and let him learn. I'm confident enough in Geno to sign him for 3 years or so and either develop Lock or a draft pick. With a solid line and defense, I think he'll get us past the one and done stage.

I don't know how anyone can be confident in Geno the way he played the last half of the season. He is going to want at least $25 million per year if not more.

Look at all the rookies and second year qbs who won their wild card games, including Purdy. Pretending we're going to fall off a cliff if we don't re-sign Geno isn't born out by the facts. He's a good, at times very good qb, who is an ill-timed turnover waiting to happen. He has always been that. Franchise tag him to see if he improves, fine. But mortgaging our future on him is just dumb.

I wonder what would happen if the nfl implemented a salary cap that listed max payable/earned by positional allowance. IOW starting QB is payed $X, backup QB is payed $X, and so on down the line for every position. All players receive the same benefit package, Head coach earns $X etc.
It would be interesting to see how equality would effect the pattern of standings results over a period of time if teams were not allowed to buy their way into a superior team for a year only to see it crumble the next.
Would that system eliminate dynasties? Or would it produce more of them?

Probably too socialistic for most peeps around here. ;)

But enough off topic comments. The truth is that the players would probably never buy such a program, though it would possibly improve parity. IMO QBs are probably over-payed and over-valued around the league. The best teams have talent all over their rosters, not just at QB. Maintaining that is the difficult part. After SB runs, it gets hard to keep a team together after the star players hit FA.
