They don't do that anymore.
You start early if your supposed to be a franchise QB.
Some good teams do it, especially if they have a decent starter already and the new guy could benefit from learning.

Patrick Mahomes seems to have benefitted from it. Levis seems better for it.

My personal opinion about why it works
isn't totally about easing them in like a lot of people think. For me, it's about giving them another thing to strive for. You come in, you learn to compete, you learn to practice the right way, you assimilate to NFL conditioning and study, and you start in the locker room as a guy trying to do what it takes to be the future. Different perspective to walk into as a pro.

I think that plan provides the rookie the best chance of succeeding when he gets to play... unless, of course, he seizes the job by force by being too good out of the gate. You can just give it to him if he's the type to leave no doubt.
