I can't see them trading within the division. I do not remember the 49ers ever doing that? I can not see them releasing him out right either. He would be insurance for Trey Lance and the 49ers would get a 3rd round comp pick when he is lost to free agency after the season if I am not mistaken
But it’s still a $25 million dollar cap hit for a guy that has a hard time spinning it past 6 yards

He should either go to Cleveland or Houston but then again Davis Mills is already their future. Jimmy sucks so bad that nobody really wants to absorb that ludicrous cap hit for a weenie arm

I never said there was a 3rd team, this is a fallacy that has been spread by my haters on dot Net (probably jealous of my inside information). There were media reports that an undisclosed second team was making offers for Baker. I told everyone that the mystery team was the Panthers. And then sure enough the Panthers ended up with him. Disinformation merchants here then panicked and tried to rewrite history so they could say I didn't predict it.
Nah your "source" said it was a done deal remember?.. enough to not care about any of the other things stated ;)

Panthers were NEVER a MYSTERY team either... Maybe a mystery for people without google.. or ESPN

I would also have a concern about how how good is Jimmy G vs how much of it was playing in the Shanahan system? He got to make a lot of throws to receivers running open due to good scheming and play action off a strong running game.
Only inter-divisional QB trade of significance I can think of is Bledsoe to Buffalo. Or did the Pats cut him and the Bills picked him up? Either way, it didn't work out well for the Bills

Cap hit is non guaranteed so teams have the ability to renegotiate contract before trading

Well you would be stupid to trade him. As bad as he is he’s still the best quarterback on your roster

If it wasn't Watson, it was Mayfield, and if wasn't Mayfield, then it's Darnold, and if not him then Garoppolo, or Mishew or who knows who. All in all, unless the player comes cheap and requires no picks to be traded, the Hawks are just doing their usual due diligence in every case. They admittedly try to be a part of every discussion in an attempt to bolster their roster.

At this point I think we could speculate the team might attempt to trade for any other QB in the league, but frankly that'd be rank speculation in the absence of real news to that effect. One of the three QBs presently on the roster will be starting for the team when the season opens and none of Darnold, Mishew, Garoppolo, Dalton or any other QB not already here will be on the roster by then.

BT has it dead right, it is JS' job to discuss every option. Besides does anyone truly think the 49ers would trade Jimmy G to a divisional rival? If not and he becomes a UFA does anyone think the team would be prepared to pay JGGQ what his market value would be, or just rent him for a season?

The mania about the QB situation and potential replacements for the team is starting to wear a bit thin. Why not Mahommes, Rodgers, or pick a good young QB? The team simply isn't trading away early picks to acquire a QB and is looking to find their guy in he next draft, where they are well situated and have the ammo to find the guy they want to draft.
THIS. John always does due diligence. It's part of his job.

I've seen comments that Pete is tanking the season and statements that he isn't. I don't believe he is, but I DO think he's playing a longer game. He's going to compete like crazy with what he's got this year, and if they get a franchise QB out of the deal, great. If not, they're pretty well-positioned for next year's draft. However, he would never just tank a season to get a number one pick. That sort of thing is anathema to him.

I agree.

You have to believe they have a longer plan in mind and aren’t just floating around looking for cheap castoffs at QB as others have suggested here.

I am looking forward to seeing a resurgent D and a more run focused and short passing O..

The speed of the new young players will bode well for ST and the results will surprisingly encourage the Nellies here who think they can’t do much of anything right anymore.

I wouldn't count on the 3rd round comp pick.

If 49ers go with with Lance as their starter, they'll have a lot of cap space to use up that may count against Jimmy G leaving.

Why do we need anyone else? We have Eason, and he’s better than Herbert.

Two things we need to remember, JimmyG led team did go to super bowl once, and NFC championship game twice. He didn't carry his team, his play led to not winning the superbowl.

If our defense is great, he could be adequate. It would be fair to say that Jimmy is proven in comparison to Geno and Lock.
